Croatian national parks - oases of peace and beauty

Croatia is a country with over a thousand islands, charming historical cities, a country with an incredible gastronomic offer, but also wonderful nature. Its natural beauties are breathtaking for anyone who decides to visit this beautiful country. There are 12 nature parks and 8 national parks in Croatia. National parks are extremely important as they are a protected area of particular beauty and conservation where human influence is limited.

NP PLITVICE LAKE Plitvice Lakes National Park is the first and oldest national park in Croatia. They were recognized as early as 1949, and thirty years later, in 1979, they were placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The 16 lakes that make up this national park are divided into Upper and Lower, and the lakes themselves are separated by travertine barriers. Did you know that there is a legend about the creation of the Plitvice Lakes National Park? According to legend, the Black Queen descended from the mountain during a great and long drought and sent strong wind and thunder for the exhausted people, so that it could finally rained. This created 16 lakes. The Queen addressed the grateful people with the words: "From now on men from all over the world will come to your beautiful Plitvice Lakes."

NP RISNJAK Risnjak National Park is located in northwestern Croatia, not far from the city of Rijeka. Risnjak NP covers an area of 64 km2 and up to 70% of the area is under strict protection. The peculiarity of this national park is that there are around 30 plant communities on a small area, 14 of which are forest communities. Three animals have also found their home in the Risnjak National Park: the wolf, the brown bear and the lynx, after which this mountain range is named.

NP NORTH VELEBIT The youngest national park in Croatia, the NP Northern Velebit, received its recognition in 1999. On the area of 109 km2 that this national park covers, we find the strict Hajdučki and Rožanski kukovi reserve, the Luka pit (one of the deepest pits in the world) , the Visibaba Botanical Reserve and the Velebit Botanical Reserve. The most famous trail of the Northern Velebit National Park is the Premužić trail, which leads to the most inaccessible parts of the park and is the best choice for exploring this natural beauty.

NP BRIJUNI Brijuni is an archipelago and a national park in the Adriatic Sea on the west coast of Istria. They consist of 3 islands and 11 islets that are so fascinating that they have long been known as the meeting point of the world aristocracy. If you want to know a real paradise and explore dinosaur tracks, historical remains, flora and fauna, enjoy the splendor of green and blue, you have to go to Brijuni National Park!

NP KRKA The Krka National Park consists of seven travertine waterfalls, of which Skradinski buk is the largest and most famous, and the others are: Bilušića buk, Brljan, Manojlovac, Rošnjak, Miljacka slap and Roški slap. Another big attraction is the island of Visovac, which is located in the lake of the same name. There is a Franciscan monastery on the island, which houses a valuable collection of books and works of art that are open to the public. When you visit these beauties of central Dalmatia, all you will hear is the magnificent rush of the water. To feel the real smells and tastes of this area, you can try the famous Drniš prosciutto and wine from Bukara.

NP PAKLENICA If you are adventurous and climbing and hiking get your adrenaline pumping, you've come to the right place. Paklenica National Park is part of the longest mountain in Croatia, Velebit. It is known for its 14 peaks, the most famous of which is Vaganski vrh. Paklenica is also rich in rocks that mountaineers visit from spring to autumn, and the largest Croatian rock is Anića kuk.

NP KORNATI "There are as many Kornati islands as there are days in the year," says a popular saying. Kornati is located in the central part of the Adriatic Sea, in Central Dalmatia and includes up to 89 islands and islets. It is interesting that the mainland part of the Kornati National Park is 100% privately owned. The maintenance and management of the park therefore requires cooperation between the landowner and the park management.

NP MLJET The greenest and most wooded Croatian island. The national park covers the north-western part of the island of Mljet. Also called Homer's Ogygia. According to legend, Odysseus was shipwrecked on Mljet and swam to the cave in which he sought refuge. At that time, the island was ruled by the nymph Calypso, who captured Odysseus and kept him as her lover for seven years. Exactly for this reason the cave is called today cave or Odysseus cave. On Mljet we also find a small island within the island. Namely the island of Sv. Marija is located in the southern part of the Great Lake Mljet. The island is open to visitors and on it you can see the church and monastery.
